Classroom Activity Title:

Life and Work Experiences in Indonesia

Activity Objectives:

This classroom activity invites a Taiwanese lecturer with over five years of work experience in Indonesia, who is currently still employed there, to share their experiences of living and working in Indonesia. The aim is to help students who are interested in working or living in Indonesia understand the cultural differences between Taiwan and Indonesia. Students will learn about work and life in Indonesia from a Taiwanese perspective, while also gaining a basic understanding of Indonesia’s politics, society, and culture.

Activity Overview:

Professor Ou shared their work and life experiences in Indonesia with the class through an online Google Meet session. The lecture covered the lecturer's reasons for moving to Indonesia, interesting experiences encountered while living there, and their interaction with local Indonesians. The lecturer also discussed various aspects of life in Indonesia, including politics, religion, transportation, lifestyle, food habits, and the urban-rural divide. Following the lecture, students participated in a Q&A session with the lecturer to gain deeper insights into salary standards, living costs, as well as policies related to real estate and healthcare in Indonesia.

Participants:

17 out of 23 students in the class

Student Reflection:

Student Name: Yang

Reflection:
The lecturer presented Indonesia’s politics, religion, transportation, and their personal life and work experiences in a humorous and visually engaging manner, which helped deepen our basic understanding of the country.
What impressed me most was that Jakarta's population is larger than that of Taiwan. Additionally, through many photos and explanations, I was able to better understand the cultural differences between Taiwan and Indonesia.
Since the lecturer, like me, has a background in teaching Chinese, I specifically asked about their experience applying to schools in Jakarta, the qualifications required, and whether to use Zhuyin or Romanized Pinyin for teaching. The advice on language requirements and practical, firsthand information was very helpful.
Furthermore, we asked the lecturer about the experiences of Taiwanese people in Indonesia regarding real estate, residency, taxes, salaries, and healthcare. I learned that there are still many restrictions on property ownership for foreigners in Indonesia, and medical costs are higher than in Taiwan. This gave me a more practical understanding of life in Indonesia.
Another takeaway was learning that Indonesia’s concepts and awareness of gender are not as open as in Taiwan. Therefore, topics such as gender and sex education, which we may freely discuss in Taiwan, may not be as widely accepted in Indonesia. This is an important cultural difference to understand before considering working or living in Indonesia.
I am grateful to the lecturer for taking the time to share their experiences abroad, which have greatly enriched my understanding.
